Shining brass and the beat of snare drums heralded the opening of the 2013 Durban Tattoo. Durban Regiment Pipe Band was amongst the 6 pipe bands which took part in the tattoo, joining approximately 160 military musicians on the field from all corners of South Africa.
Spectacular evening shows were held in a purpose built arena at Natal Mounted Rifles parade ground, between 19 and 21 September 2013. The organisers once again outdid themselves to ensure that KZN residents were treated to an unforgettable world class military extravaganza.
This year, the castle doors opened to unveil a 60+ strong massed pipe band, followed by military bands from as far a field as Kroonstad and Polokwane, drum majorettes from DHS, an anti poaching display, the SA Navy precision drill team from Simons town, a conventional warfare display, a border control display, a bridge building display, crowd control display, and a moving tribute to Madiba.
Approximately 500 musicians and performers assembled on parade ground for the finale. The spectators were treated to a dramatic rendition of “Game of Thrones” played by the massed military bands and pipe bands, followed by “Band of Brothers”, “Flower of Scotland” and “Amazing Grace”. The final tune, “The 1812 Overture”, was accompanied by the firing of 25-pound guns by the Natal Field Artillery, and ended with the traditional fireworks display and lone piper.
