Members of Durban Regiment Pipe Band took to the parade ground at the 2012 KZN Military Tattoo. The tattoo was held between 11 and 13 July, and included two shows each evening. The organisers outdid themselves to ensure that spectators were treated to a truly unforgettable show. The backdrop to the show comprised a giant castle, complete with turrets and smoke, and the whole set was lit by state of the art lighting with special effects. Performers came from all over South Africa, and from as far afield as the UK. The arena was designed to seat 2000 people, and the layout of the grandstands around the parade ground made for a fantastic atmosphere.
The castle doors opened to unveil a colourful show, which included military bands, Zulu dancers, the breathtaking precision of the the navy drill team, horses, gun races, choirs, pipe bands, cannons and fireworks. The finale included a spectacular massed band, comprising all of the military bands and pipe bands which took part. The massed band played stirring renditions of “Going Home”, “Band of Brothers”, and “The Highland Cathedral”. The final tune, “The 1812 Overture”, was accompanied by the firing of 25-pound guns, and ended with the traditional fireworks display and lone piper. Anyone who missed the event, missed out on a really special show. Don’t forget to look out for next years tattoo. Also note that a DVD of this years event will be available through the organisers website at a later date (www.kznmilitarytattoo.org.za).
